Conical Compresion Springs

Conical springs, also known as tapered springs, usually function as a type of compression spring that is tapered in shape. Due to their unique shape, they are considered more stable than similar springs like extension springs. We produce a variety of tapered springs, including barrel springs and constant rate tapered springs, spanning multiple sizes and finish options. One of the key applications where conical springs are used is antenna springs.

Conical springs and other tapered springs can be used in a wide variety of applications, including general industrial, aerospace, automotive, medical, and many more. We have more than 125 different tapered spring variations, available in an assortment of finishes.

Characteristics of Conical Springs

Conical springs are characterized not only by their shape, but also by the fact that they are more laterally stable and less liable to buckle than regular compression springs. There is a necessary increase in the applied force to compress a tapered spring due to the flexibility of the larger-diameter coils causing progressive contact with one another. This characteristic can be a plus for spring-supported vibrating objects by reducing the resonant (bouncing) amplitudes commonly found in constant-diameter, spring-supported systems. However, its most beneficial characteristic is that it can be designed so that each active coil fits within the next, with the solid height equal to one or two thicknesses of wire.

The Parameters Required Before Customizing A Conical Spring

Whether you are developing a conical compression spring design or simply ordering your springs, it is important that you provide the following spring specifications and information.

1. Free Length, Maximum, Minimum.
2. Controlling Diameter, Outside Diameter Maximum. Inside Diameter Minimum. Pitch Diameter. Works Inside (Dia. Hole). Works Over (Dia. Shaft).
3. Number of Coils.
4. Wire Size. Decimal size if possible. Material, Kind and Grade.
5. Loads at deflected positions.
6. Style of Ends, (see illustrations). Right or Left Hand Wound.
7. Finish. Plain unless otherwise specified.
8. Maximum Solid Length.
9. Frequency of Compression.
